Mayday Calls in the USA - Coast Guard Discontinues *CG

USA - Introduced in the 1990's, many US mobile phone service providers included *CG as a means to contact the USCG for emergency response.  Because of the difficulties in routing these calls, and the fact that the service was never nationwide, the USCG has asked mariners in all US waters except Alaska to discontinue the use of this "speed dial" number, as it may lead to a delay in providing rescue.
